Dawn of the Dead (2004) image analysis 1

In this scene from Dawn of the Dead (2004) Ana is standing on the boat that her and the survivors have just escaped in. This close up shot of her shows her facial expression. The ambient lighting is bright and the diagesis on the boat connotes happiness and the seeming bright future/escape through the use of pathetic fallacy. However, her eyes gazing over at her boyfriend who got bitten that they left behind is of sadness. In this shot whilst she is sad that they had to leave Michael behind she is holding the rope that is keeping the American flag up on her boat. This gives this shot a patriotic feel as she is the final girl and has been strong and tough and has had to fight to get as far as she has.

Ana’s character reminds me of Fran from the early version of Dawn of the Dead (1979) in the way that they are both tough women, feminism is typical in both of these movies. By George A Romero showing that he is an auteur in DOTD (1979) and going against the cultural dominant ideologies (CDI) of most horror movies of the time by presenting women as weak, he may have influenced movies like DOTD (2004) to change attitudes towards women and present them as tough like the common male hero, as it was revolutionary of its time. In comparison I think Ana is the tougher of the two characters as she kills many zombies and remains calm when she has to leave her boyfriend behind. Fran and Ana are both tough mentally, but Ana is also tough physically like a male hero would be.
