Dawn of the Dead (1979) image analysis 3

In this scene from Dawn of the Dead (1979) a SWAT team head into a Puerto Rican ghetto boarding house and the racist army officer Wooley runs in the room and before he can even tell this guy is a zombie he shoots his head off. Wooley is laughing and seems like he is enjoying killing these people in a sadistic way. In a way we feel sorry for the zombies in this scene and we want Wooley to die instead as he is racist. George A. Romero does this purposely as he is an auteur and is against racism, Wooley’s annoying and racist behaviour results in him getting shot by Peter who happens to be black.

The close up of the zombie getting his head blown off shows off the good body horror effects used and is pretty impressive considering this film was mad in the 70’s. In previous years Romero wouldn’t be able to use gore like this because the hays code was in place. However when he was making this movie it became more relaxed and body horror effects like this one were being used to great effect.
