In this scene from Dawn of the Dead (2004) Glen accidently chainsaws and kills Monica. The fact that Monica dies fits into the cultural dominant ideologies (CDI) of horror films, she is the ‘female victim’ in the movie which typically are attractive blonde girls who usually have sex during the film and then end up dying. In fact around 20 minutes before this scene Monica has sex with Steve, and then she gets killed.
The director in this movie is Zack Snyder, but the older version of DOTD (1979) was directed by George A. Romero who wouldn’t use ‘female victims’ as he is an Auteur and is against sexism towards women which is apparent in his films. Body horror is used in this scene effectively and looks realistic; this is partly due to the fact that fast paced montage editing is used at this time and the viewer’s eyes are deceived into thinking even more detailed gore is shown when in fact it is largely due to a clever use of mise-en-scene and editing.
