Class trailer review: 30 Days Of Night

Name of film: 30 Days Of Night

Year released: 2005

Genre of trailer: Horror

Your mark (after viewing): 9/10

What happened in the trailer?

The movie is set above the Arctic Circle where night lasts for 30 days. In this time the vampires attack the humans as there is no sunlight so they can attack anytime during the day. There is a sheriff shown in the trailer who I presume is the male hero. The trailer leaves us wondering whether the vampires can be stopped.

Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features are fulfilled well?

- Canted or tilted angles, restricted narration, collision cuts, loads of horror techniques = powerful trailer
- Story made clear nicely through guy in prison + text, the trailer has a classy feel and there are no cheesy voice overs
- Collision cut at the start from the woman in the kitchen doing some washing up to her getting grabbed and pulled out of a window, this stared off the quick paced trailer and was very jumpy.
- Fast paced, exciting
- Brief glimpses of the vampires and how they look (but it saved properly for the film) and how brutal they are

Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful, and would put off its target audience? How is it disappointing?

- Not enough horror/gory bits (PG rated)
- Vampire thing too subtle?

What was the trailer's average score in class? Why did it achieve that mark?

8.5 - Overall best trailer we watched. Lots of horror features, nice pacing. Good concept and clear story.
