Psycho (1960) image analysis 2

When Marion stops at the Bates Motel to stay for a night the audience can tell something bad is going to happen just by looking at the mise-en-scene. The dark gothic house in the top left is the stereotypical style for a horror/thriller movie, it is also placed on top of a hill and the low angle expressionist shot emphasises its power over Marion, who is a tiny figure near the bottom of the shot. In the world of the film (diagesis) it is raining heavily which is why Marion stopped at the Bates motel because she couldn’t see the road. Through the use of pathetic fallacy the rain connotes danger and uneasiness for Marion’s future.
